New Book by Edward Said"Culture is a way of fighting against extinction and obliteration," says renowned literary critic Edward Said in a February 2003 interview conducted by David Barsamian in the new South End Press title, Culture and Resistance. In this interview, Said is speaking specifically about the Palestinian struggle for recognition and justice. But in six powerful conversations with David Barsamian in Culture and Resistance, Said reveals his latest thoughts on a range of topics, including the war on terrorism, the war against Iraq, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and contemporary Palestinian poetry. Described by the New York Times as "one of the most influential literary and cultural critics in the world," Edward Said was born in Jerusalem, Palestine, and was educated there, in Egypt, and the United States. He is the author of 15 books, including Orientalism (1979), Culture and Imperialism (1994), and Covering Islam: How the Media and the Experts Determine How We See the Rest of the World (1999). In Culture and Resistance, Said explores the role of culture in resistance movements, and offers a compelling vision for a secular, democratic future in the Middle East.
