House Overwhelmingly Passes Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act

On July 15, the House voted 418 to 2 to pass the Burmese Freedom and Democracy Act, which will ban imports from Burma, freeze the regime's assets, and ensure that Burma's dictatorship cannot receive IMF or World Bank loans.

This important bill, once enacted, will be the strongest international response yet to the ongoing crisis in Burma. The new sanctions will also create political space for the vital avenues of new pressure against the regime, be it at the UN Security Council, ban on remittances, or other options.

While we still are far from achieving the ultimate goal - a free and democratic Burma - we have won an important battle!
