Campaign for Labor Rights Seeks Campaign Coordinator

Reposted Feb 9, 2003

Campaign for Labor Rights (CLR) has been described as the "grassroots mobilizing department" of the U.S. anti-sweatshop movement. Our campaigns and strategies are designed in collaboration with workers struggling to gain the right to organize, the right to earn a living wage in a clean, safe work environment and the right to bargain collectively. For seven years CLR has promoted local action in resistance to labor rights violations both in the United States and around the world, working with other partners.

CLR has a small office based in Washington, DC. We are seeking applications for the Campaigns Coordinator position.

Job duties entail:

  • Collaborating with CLR partners throughout the world to choose to work on anti-sweatshop campaigns where workers are organized and seek support (whether or not they are a recognized union). We work closely with these workers at all stages of the campaign and seek to find a number of pressure points through which to build successful support activity. This takes the form of email, phone conversations and face-to-face meetings. Some email is in English and Spanish.

Our current campaigns include: support of sweatshop workers in El Salvador; support for workers in the banana industry in Ecuador (Naboa); support of US-based agricultural workers organizing against Taco Bell; support for trade unionists in Coca-Cola plants in Colombia and Guatemala; support of Alcoa workers in Mexico.

New campaigns are chosen by the Campaigns Coordinator through collaboration with our partners, in consultation with CLR's Director, and with the approval of the CLR Board. In addition to the campaigns around which CLR mobilizes, the Campaign Coordinator will publicize and monitor a number of other campaigns as they are in the process of developing.

  • Writing and emailing "Labor Alerts" to 10,000 subscribers in some 900 U.S. communities. These alerts, and follow-up contacts, are the main way CLR mobilizes for solidarity campaigns.
  • Mobilizing the Rapid Action Network, a network of activists who have committed to mobilizing six times during one year for campaigns targeted by CLR. These are CLR's core activists.
  • Writing a monthly Index that indexes all of the labor rights information received during the course of the month.
  • Organizing media work around anti-sweatshop campaigns. This includes a monthly radio show.
  • Organizing, from time to time, U.S. tours of workers from these targeted campaigns.
  • Helping to coordinating SweatFree Communities, a national network of activists in the U.S. who are working in their own communities to pass initiatives against sweatshops.
  • Maintaining and updating the CLR database of partners, contacts and organizations working on campaigns.
  • Working with the Director to update material on the website, and provide background material for fundraising.
  • Representing, occasionally, CLR in coalition work.

General skills necessary:

  • to have a demonstrated ability to organize
  • to collaborate with our partners, network of activists, staff, and CLR board
  • to write and speak concisely and clearly
  • to have a broad understanding of the driving forces of corporate-centered globalization
  • to have a demonstrated ability to develop strategic approaches which specific campaigns to the root causes of the global sweatshop-based economy.

Specific skills necessary:

  • Working knowledge PCs and the internet including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Adobe Acrobat, Excel, Pagemaker, Microsoft Publisher,Access and internet search engines.
  • Fluency in Spanish would be helpful.

Compensation: $26,000 to begin. Full health coverage, including dental. Four weeks vacation. There is an initial 3 month probation period, after three months there will be an evaluation conducted by the CLR Personnel Committee.

Application Deadline: March 15, 2003
